In this blog I will be reviewing 6 TED talks everyone should take the time to watch. If there are any we’ve missed off we’d love to hear about them, join the conversation over on our social media channels or contact one of our social media gurus!
Where my love for TED talks began
My love for TED talks began in my small university dorm room in Manchester when I stumbled across a video doing research for coursework that was due the next day, no judgement… we’ve all been there! As any student would, I took “just a 5-minute break” from doing research and decided to watch it. And I was hooked. If you’ve never watched one, TED Talks are influential videos from expert speakers on education, business, science, tech and creativity, with subtitles in 100+ languages. Ideas free to stream and download.
I try to squeeze in a video or two whenever I can – due to the vast variety of topics covered by Ted Talks you’ll always find something to either learn a new subject or provide a new perspective to topics that you already know something about.
I’ve put together a list of my current favourites (some old, some new) – hope you enjoy them as much as I do!
1. What makes something go viral?
An office prank including wildlife? Or an exploding watermelon? Or both?
This is a question I hear all the time. Dao Nguyen goes into detail in her understanding on what makes something go viral. Though she mentions several reasons, in the word where we use digital platforms as a way of connecting, I love how it all relates back to the importance of human connection.
2. Beware online “filter bubble”
Eli Pariser looks at how our newsfeed and search result algorithms decide to prioritise information based on our interests. Even though there tends to be a negative connotation attached to the word “algorithm” (did someone say fake news?), awareness is key as they also add value to our everyday lives.
3 How great leaders inspire action
This one is a classic talk from Simon Sinek discussing inspirational leadership and organisations. It also offers an extremely simple approach for the best advertising campaigns on earth – the “why?” As it currently stands, the video has had almost 43 million views on the website – if you haven’t seen it yet, stop what you’re doing and watch it now.
4. Your body language may shape who you are
The talk where Amy Cuddy unleashed the notion of “power posing” to the world – this is a must-see for anyone who may be struggling with confidence or just wanting to understand how body language affects you and the people around you.
5. Why we do what we do
Tony Robbins breaks down the importance of “why” in human behaviour. Similar to Sinek’s theory, there is power in understanding why we do what we do. Once we understand this, we are motivated to start the journey towards fulfilment – be that in your career or personal life.
And finally, to end with a light-hearted one.
6. This is what happens when you reply to spam email
James Veitch describes his hilarious interaction with an email scammer, Solomon. This weeks-long email thread is a perfect lunchtime watch when you need a break from those spreadsheets.
